Back in Ghana!

The January 2014 Ghana site team arrived safely in Accra last night after two long flights! We arrived in Accra late in the evening and then went immediately went to the hotel to rest. Everyone is doing well and in good spirits.

This morning we were all happy to sleep in after our long trip. After breakfast, we travelled to World Vision Ghana's national office to debrief the senior leadership team on the purpose and objectives of our trip. We were also able to see more of the city today as we travelled to a meeting with Dr. Peter Obeng-Asamoa, president of the Ghana Blind Union. We were able to interview Dr. Obeng-Asamoa and several of his staff members for our documentary. They provided useful insight and shared with us many of the challenges that people with disabilities face in Ghana. However, he also shared with us the progress Ghana is making towards greater inclusion of persons with disabilities, especially in regard to technology access and employment. When Dr. Obeng-Asamoa was a student, he mentioned that he only had access to a few books in braille. He said that today most schools have an embosser which they can use to render materials in braille. Dr. Obeng-Asamoa also provided us with several other contacts who we will interview later in the week.

We had a free afternoon today, so we spent some time walking around the neighborhoods near our hotel looking for a pair of sandals for one forgetful member of our team (EVIE!). Due to Evie's extreme love of shopping, we were out for several hours looking for just the right pair (I may have exaggerated a bit this last sentence).

We are all doing very well and adjusting to Ghana and the warm weather! Please keep us in your prayers as we will be travelling tomorrow to the northern city of Tamale where we will be conducting our field work. Many logistical details will need to be finalized tomorrow to ensure that our activities will be able to be accomplished, so prayers would be appreciated.

Hope all is well back home!
Nate & Team
